Debit or… Debit?
Trend: Self Checkout Interfaces – the “Cancel” Menu
Here at UI Trends, we normally cover trends in Web UI’s and occasionally we’ll bring up desktop applications. But we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t step outside of the box every once in a while.
With that in mind, I couldn’t help but write about something that has been bugging me for years. I know you’ve seen it too and been annoyed. You’re at the grocery store, and you’re trying to “self checkout”. You swipe your bank card, then low and behold, you’re asked for your PIN. You don’t want to enter a PIN!! You’re trying to earn points on your card. You’ve been saving and saving and saving up these elusive points for YEARS now; only 50,000 more to go and you can finally get that awesome “foot spa”. So why in the world would you want to use your card as a debit card and forgo these precious points?
But there is a way! You may not know it, but there’s an entire world of opportunities, hidden just one click away. It’s a a whole new menu, that leads to a magical land of free magazine subscriptions, $25 gift cards, and George Foreman grills. All you have to do is hit CANCEL… what, you didn’t know that??
It’s sad to say, but no one really expects much ease of use from these Self Checkout Systems. The real problem is that these UI’s are effectively hiding functionality that the merchant would rather not pay for (credit card transactions are usually more expensive to process than a debit card transaction). And even worse, they’re doing it very inconsistently. Some have started actually including a ”Credit” button, but it’s either small and indistinguishable from the number keys on the PIN screen, or you still have to press one more buttons to even see it. Why not just making it more interesting and have the button randomly jump around the screen?

Somewhat related:
Has anyone noticed the all-caps words “DO NOT USE PEN” directly over the area where you digitally sign for a credit card transaction?
I still hesitate each time I see it: “Well, what the hell should I use, instead?”
Seeing people struggle with this, astute clerks have trained themselves to notice the hesitation and offer a suggestion: “Yeah, just go ahead and sign with that”.
Now, I realize the designers of this model probably had complaints from stores because people were ruining their displays with ballpoint pens. But instead of fixing the design (1. make it work with a pen or 2. make it less likely to be damaged), they threw on a band-aid.

Another issue that bothers me is every single store chain has their own self checkout interface, which is fine, but there is no standard process that any of them follow. Some of them require pressing buttons on the checkout computer and then pressing the same button where you swipe your card (horrible usability), others make you flip the card you are scanning, some have touch screens that might require that little stylus deal mounted on a chain so you don’t steal it while others make you press buttons.
The one constant that all stores have is their workers will get really annoyed if you don’t know their specific process. DUH!!!!!!!!

As annoying as the self checkout interfaces are, the thing that annoys me the most is the bagging part. Sometimes I’ll bag something too fast for the machine to recognize and it’ll tell me to bag the item, which I already did. My initial action is to take out the item and re-bag it. Low and behold, the machine doesn’t like that either. So there I am, tapping my feet with the item in hand, waiting 5 seconds for the machine to tell me to re-bag the item.
I only use self checkout lines if I have less than 10 items, and especially when the cashiers take millenniums to checkout the customer in front of me.

No, the best of all are the ones that ask you CREDIT or DEBIT first, and then ignore your CREDIT selection and still ask for a PIN. Then you need to hit CANCEL in order to reinforce the fact that the first step was only added in order to waste your precious time.
