I use Linux (Ubuntu flavor), where all (well, a lot of) software is in packages on official servers. Users are notified of Updates to any of those packages by an icon in the task bar and one dialogue box for all packages where you can choose to update all at once. 

I think this is so much nicer than the windows way you described.</description>
