Seeing Stars
Trend: Star symbol – save for later
A small, hollow star on your computer screen is now the universally recognized symbol for “save for later.” Gmail first added stars to email messages, and it spread to RSS readers and even the browsers themselves.

Of course, five small stars in a row is the universal symbol for rating a movie, thanks to Netflix and Youtube.

Didn’t IE use a star for Favorites before Gmail?

You may be right, Ed. However I don’t think IE had a star that you could click to toggle the way you do with Gmail. I guess that is the distinction I was thinking of.

Ahh, I think you’re right there. Though IE8 now does have a clickable star…so the star has gained traction even in Redmond :-)
