Glassy Smooth Dialogs
Trend: Transparent Dialogs
submission from guest author John Talton:
Dialogs have been around for years, non-modal and the dreaded modal. They have of-course made their way to the web. Initialy in the form of simple JavaScript Alert but now as part of the standard CSS. Many designers have latched onto CSS’s transparency (and Apple’s design) to create glassy looking dialogs. With the addition of the always popular drop shadow which is part of every designers toolkit.

After getting past the first one minute wow factor, I think having the details of the underlying information leak through is distracting. A reasonable compromise to me might be to have the dialog transition from transparenct to opaque when it gets the focus (or perhaps when the mouse is within its boundaries).
