Provider Icon Swarms
Trend: Social Networking
With so many companies competing to provide online services such as feed readers, microblogging, social networking, and authentication, it’s hard to stay up to date with all the available providers. Designers are turning to swarms of same-sized icons to give their readers a choice of integration providers. Sometimes these are useful. Sometimes, overwhelming.
In my opinion, the better-designed swarms stick to a few common choices. They are mainly there to encourage users to interact, rather than to enable every possible integration.

Mr. Farmer,
What methodology are you using to cull your list of swarms?

I’ve never head the pleasure of building such a swarm, so I wouldn’t know how to keep it small. Stick with networks you actually use, and avoid the “50 icons in one button” sites you might find on the web. (I think culling applies better to herds, anyway. Swatting works better on swarms.)
